What are your favourite novels or books about Hungary? I am delighted with Istvan Örköny's "One Minute Stories", which I picked up in Budapest. I also enjoyed Zsuzsanna Ardo's "Culture Shock" about daily life and customs in Hungary, published in the UK.. |

Sziasztok,
to those of you brave people learning Hungarian
Talking about örkény István's "One minute novels", I'm trying to read them in Hungarian together with the recordings made by Mácsai Pál (3CD Hangoskönyv- Egypercesek). It helps a lot!
The text is not included with the CD, so you need to buy the book apart. (Egyperces novellák, edited by Palatinus Könyvek)
Have fun!

| If you like the language, how it sounds and you enjoy play on words or sounds, I think you will really appreciate the humor of "Szamárfül" by József Romhányi. |

I tried to order these CDs from the LIBRI site but although they were ready to sell me a cheap book they would not send the CDs with a book or on their own, claiming they were "korlatozott peldanyszambon" ('limited copies available'?). Where else can I try? |

In my last post, by "cheap" I meant the book cost very little, not that it was shoddy! LIBRI have a very good, quick service.
Other books I have enjoyed are Magda Szabo's "The Door", just published in English. A very clear yet evocative style, a little like the classic "The Lark" by Deszö Kosztolanyi.

|

I especially liked several books of Sándor Márai, János Székely, Antal Szerb and Gyula Illyés. I read them in German or French, depending on which edition I happened to find. As for translations, they don't always come directly from the Hungarian originals. My German version of János Székely's novel "Kísértés", e.g., was translated from English. This doesn't improve text quality... _________________ Hans |
